Previously, I shared how to font hack S60 3rd Edition FP1 (i.e. Nokia N95-1, -3, Nokia E71) phones to display Unicode characters. Great for those who want to see the names of those Japanese songs that they can't read!
To get the same result on 3rd Edition FP2 (i.e. N96, N85) and 5th Edition (5800XM, N97), the method changes quite a bit. The same font-on-a-card trick doesn't work, but rather, a third party program is required to force the font change. I have confirmed that this works on my N97, but I'm still in the process of testing it on an FP2 device. Anyhoo, here's how to do it:
- Get a dev cert. HoFo has a great guide here. The process is quick, but you'll likely have to wait 10 days before the certificate files themselves are available for download. No biggie.
- Download SignSIS. When installing, ignore all the stuff about getting a cert, as you've done that in step one already.
- Follow Symbian-Guru.com's excellent guide to changing fonts here. For your font, choose Arial Unicode from your computer. It should be bundled with your system or with Microsoft Office.
- Gloat in triumph as you can now pick the proper Japanese song to play because you recognize the characters, even though you still can't read what it says.
